Illayaraja - Living Legend

Illayarja.
The very name sounds music to millions of ears or should I say trillions of ears across the globe & especially if you are an ardent Indian music follower. It goes without saying that he is a musical genius who is the first composer who has created & composed a song only on 3 notes or swaras i.e., Sa Re Ga.. He is the first Asian to compose a full symphony performed by the world renowned Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London's Walthamstow Town Hall.

I would like to share with you an interesting fact, way back in 1991 when I was on the tour of Tamil Nadu and I happened to be in Madras now Chennai. I was walking past a music store at Liberty Theatre in Kodambakam. I heard the sounds of Violin and it totally captivated and mesmerised me. It made me stop & listen. At that time I did not know who the composer was or whether it is a film music or a musical album. The sounding of violins was such  that it made me just walk into the store and before I knew anythng I had bought  the cassette. You would be surprised to know that we did not have a cassette player to play at that point in time in my house. That is the power of music that this genius called Illayaraja generates with his music compositions.

Further, you would be happy to know that in 2003 according to a BBC International Poll, in which 155 countries voted, his composition "Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu" from the 1991 film Dalapathi stood 4th in world's Top 10 Most Popular songs of all time. That is the song that I am referring to and I wish you enjoy the sounds of Violin in this song.

According to me Illayaraja is the only composer from India who can interpret & mediate the true spirit of Indian ragas in International understood format called "The Symphony" to the world audience.

Music might be Illaraja's life, but his music has become part our life.

Just visit the following link for the music I have been talking about, hope you enjoy the sound of violins.
